A frugal blog from Central PA

Every day I end my day thinking of all the things I’ve done and somehow it never seems to be enough. There is so much left undone.

My family is working toward a lot of goals and though we work at them bit by bit, they never seem to get any closer. It is only when someone asks me we find the time to do all the things we do that I realize we are much closer to our goals than I thought we were.

As a family we are interested in practicing these things:

  • Frugality – saving money, making things last, having enough but not too much
  • Simplicity – getting rid of the clutter, the extra activities, gaining more time
  • Sustainability – eating local food, eating humanely raised meat, being environmentally friendly

These are big goals, and they often conflict. Sometimes we can’t support one goal without moving away from another. That is the challenge and the solution is to make the best decision we can. That has led us to doing things like cloth diapering, raising a garden and joining a CSA at the same time, making our own pizza and much more.

People who find out some of the thing we are doing – either by discussion or by taking part in them – wonder how we made the switch to all of these things. The truth is we did it one thing at a time. And we continue to add things to our lives that support our views. Sometimes this means not doing something as well.

This blog is meant to help me remember all that we have accomplished and also to help readers in Central PA, and other places, take their first steps toward adopting frugality in their lives.
